Paul Smith est né en 1972. Originaire du Suderland, il vit et travaille à Londres. Son œuvre témoigne de son intérêt pour le perdu et le retrouvé, ce qui s'efface de la mémoire et ce qui se synthétise en traces dans le paysage. Explorer des lieux oubliés et saisir l'essence d'un instant d'abandon fait partie intégrante de sa pratique depuis ses premiers travaux photographiques du paysage post-industriel du Nord-Est de l'Angleterre. Bien que les figures humaines soient largement absentes de ses travaux, on peut sans aucun doute ressentir leur présence. Paul Smith explore le temps, l'endroit et le point où l'humain et le non-humain se rencontrent silencieusement.

Paul Smith a exposé largement au Royaume-Uni, avec récemment deux expositions personnelles - Uncertain Promises - The Unofficial George Eliot Countryside à One Paved Court, Richmond.

Il a participé à la tournée du Contemporary British Painting Prize en 2016 et en 2018, une résidence à la Staithes Studios Gallery dans le North Yorkshire a été suivie d’une exposition personnelle. La même année de Painting the Anthropocene à One Paved Court, Richmond.
Il a également assuré le commissariat de l’exposition collective Mind How You Go : Small Paintings from the Edgelands à la Lion House Gallery, Twickenham.

Paul Smith is a London based artist from Sunderland. His work is predominantly narrative abstract painting and collage exploring an interest in what is lost from memory and how that loss is “synthesized as trace in the landscape”. Paul has exhibited widely in the UK, most recently solo exhibitions ‘Uncertain Promises: The Unofficial George Eliot Countryside’ at One Paved Court, Richmond and ‘Are You Leaving for the Country?’ at Muse Gallery, Portobello Road, London. He was part of the touring Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2016 and in 2018 a residency with Staithes Studios Gallery in North Yorkshire was followed by a solo exhibition and later that year ‘Painting the Anthropocene’ at One Paved Court, Richmond. In February this year he curated the group exhibition ‘Mind How You Go: Small Paintings from the Edgelands’ at Lion House Gallery in Twickenham
